* IMPACT WITH JUPITER *
========================
JPL's Galileo spacecraft is scheduled to observe 16 of the 21 possible
impacts of the fragments of Comet Shoemaker-Levy-9 with Jupiter this July,
according to project scientist Dr. Torrence Johnson. Galileo is scheduled
to observe 16 of the 21 possible impacts of the fragments of Comet
Shoemaker-Levy-9 with Jupiter this July.
Galileo, however, won't be alone in keeping its eyes on Jupiter. Although
the Galileo spacecraft will be in the best position to view Comet
Shoemaker-Levy-9's impact with Jupiter, Voyager 2 and the Ulysses spacecraft
will record various measurements from the event.
On its way out of the solar system, Voyager 2 will be heading south, about
6 billion kilometers (3.7 billion miles) from Jupiter, and will have the
comet's impact sites in its line of sight. The spacecraft will observe with
its ultraviolet spectrometer and planetary radio astronomy instrument, and
numerical data will be returned in real time.
The Ulysses spacecraft, on its way to explore the sun's polar regions, will
be able to make measurements of radio and plasma waves from the comet's
impact from its position at about 75 degrees south of the sun's equator and
about 800 million kilometers (500 million miles) from Jupiter.
JPL's Deep Space Network facility at Goldstone, California will perform
radio astronomy on the synchrotron emission from Jupiter's radiation belt,
looking for disturbances caused by Shoemaker-Levy dust.

Subject: Ham Radio in WA State
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
I'm relocating to Washington (Enumclaw area) and I'd like to correspond
with someone in Washington about the state of ham radio there.
I noticed from a quick look in the repeater directory that there seems to
be a significantly greater number of 440 repeaters in the state than 2
meters. Is this the case?
Also, if someone knows of a ham radio club in the area I'd really
appreciate it.
The ham license plates has been covered here, thanks.
Anything else would be appreciated.

I believe that if the VEC submits on paper, the FCC has to manually
process that paper... if it is electronic, then there is less paper
shuffling at the FCC. That would allow the FCC to go faster.

Don't worry; according to Part 97, you sent your renewal in on time,
and can continue operating until your new license arrives. Panic if
you don't see it by the middle of July (or at least call the FCC in

To the best of my knowledge, your use of the radio is covered under
the license issued to your township for their use of the particular
Fire/EMS frequency(s) they are allowed to operate on. No individual
license (neither Federal or State) is required. Neither the feds
nor the state care about who actually owns the actual equipment,
although the feds do care about that the radio is appropriately
FCC approved (type accepted) for the purpose you are using it for.
Hope that helps,

I believe most railroads have switched to sensors, and don't even try
to put voltage on the tracks anymore. And there aren't any continuity
checks, or that Amtrak accident on the bridge last year wouldn't have
happened.

When did this go into effect? I passed my 5 WPM in January. I have
received nothing from the FCC. The VEC just sent me home with the
CSCE and said they did not have to send anything in.
I believe this started in March when the FCC began accepting the new
(current) form 610 (and ONLY that form). If you were to move, say,
and submit a photocopy of your CSCE with one of your license and a
change-of-address 610, I'll bet you'd get a new license that said Tech
Plus, too.

It seems that there are so many transmission lines impedances (i.e 50, 75,

Is there a technical reason for this or was it merely a development of

Both of you seem to be working under the assumption that *every* VE
team would have to use electronic filing. That's not necessarily the
case. Obviously, those VE teams who have the capability would be more
popular among impatient applicants than those who didn't, but that's
the free market at work.
>On the other hand, I don't see any reason the VECs could not file
>electronically - for what it's worth.
It's worth about 2 weeks for the ARRL VEC. All the VE documents have
to be keypunched into the ARRL computer for verification, then the
*paper* is forwarded to the FCC where it's keypunched *again*. Any
time keypunching can be reduced, delays will be reduced. Having the
VECs submit on disk should drop the delay at the FCC to a couple of
days, and moving the keypunching out to the VEs should cut the 2 week
delay at the VEC to a couple of days. Add a week for the US Mail,
and an application should the processed, and the license mailed and
received in 2 weeks tops. That's a reasonable turnaround time.
